Buying Your
Chinese Yixing Teapot

7 buying tips

If you want to buy a Chinese Yixing teapot, you should know what to look for.

Here are 7 tips to help you buy one of these treasures for a lifetime of green tea enjoyment.

  • The teapot shape and design should make your heart happy.

There are so many designs, shapes, and hues that you can express your most individualized tastes.

  • You should buy a different teapot for each variety of tea.

This applies not only to the categories of green, black, oolong, white, and flavored, but within those categories also.

For example, among the green varieties, you should have a separate teapot for Chun Mee and another for Gyokuro.

  • The price may be a good indication of quality.

Teapots that are mass produced may cost only a few dollars.

Better quality ones will start around $30 U. S., with artisan collectibles costing thousands of dollars, and museum pieces costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

  • The lowest quality ones will have a coarse, uneven appearance and the better quality ones look more finished with greater attention to details.

  • A true Zisha clay teapot has a crisp metallic sound when you tap the opening rim.

Similar teapots made in other provinces may contain more clay which gives a more dull sound.

This metallic sound can only be tested before the teapot is put in water.

  • It should also have a tightly fitted lid.

You can test the fit by filling it with water, putting your finger over the hole in the lid, and trying to pour.

Nothing should come out the spout if the lid is tight.

  • Looking for a collectible Chinese Yixing teapot to treasure for many generations?

The most prized selections are the most elegant.

They are very light and thin, petite rather than large, and have the simple timeless beauty that comes from exquisite craftsmanship.

Owning several of these teaware treasures will bring a great deal of adventure into your life.

Enjoy!
