Tart Cherry Juice Health Benefits
Less belly fat with cherries?
Tart cherry juice health benefits may include a reduced risk of metabolic syndrome and belly fat, according to recent cherry health research.
Using an animal model of metabolic syndrome, researchers fed two groups of rats a high fat diet for 90 days.
- One group received the high fat diet plus 1% tart cherry powder.
- The other group received the highfat diet matched for calories and macronutrients, but without the tart cherry powder.
The group receiving the cherries had
- less belly fat (abdominal retroperitoneal adipose tissue)
- lower blood lipid levels
- lower total body fatty mass
- hormonal pathway changes showing reduced systemic inflammation and metabolic syndrome.
Researchers suggest that the anthocyanins from the tart cherries modify the way energy is metabolized including the calories from a high fat diet (Seymour, Regular tart cherry intake alters abdominal adiposity, adipose gene transcription, and inflammation in obesity-prone rats fed a high fat diet, Journal Med Food, October 2009).
What is metabolic syndrome?
Metabolic syndrome includes obesity, high blood lipid levels, and systemic inflammation.
It is associated with increased risk of diabetes type 2 and cardiovascular heart disease.
Tart cherries are the same sour red cherries traditionally used in pies.
